Overview on Information System Management

A student asked: “I am interested in Information System Management (ISM) but I still do not understand what I will do with this degree? What skills or courses that I must take to be a successful information system manager? Please advice.”

Answer: Let’s look at the big picture of what is happening in a company. Every company owner needs certain information to make decisions, to identify problems, and to control the operations. Before Information Technology (IT), owner must walk around the company to observe how things operate and takes action when necessary. However owner cannot spend all the time observing so he has to rely on managers to report things to him. Unfortunately not all reports are accurate as managers often hide their mistakes or modify the report to make things look better than they are. Without accurate information, owner cannot make good decision or know about problems until it is too late. By applying information technology to automate business processes and collect data, owner can get accurate information faster, and make decision quickly and effectively.
